Description

Description:

Produced in Saint Lucia by Saint Lucia Distillers, this expression forms part of the Admiral Rodney range, a series named after ships involved in the 1782 Battle of the Saints. HMS Royal Oak represents the original blend within the range, positioned as a balanced, mid-aged rum combining accessibility with structured ageing. The rum is made from molasses, following a British-style Caribbean tradition. Fermentation is relatively controlled, producing a clean wash that supports a more refined distillation profile rather than heavy ester development. Distillation is carried out entirely in a Coffey column still, specifically drawing distillate from the lower plates, which results in a slightly heavier and more flavourful spirit compared to lighter column outputs.

Maturation takes place in ex-bourbon American oak casks, with the blend composed of rums aged between approximately 7 and 12 years. Tropical ageing conditions in Saint Lucia accelerate interaction between spirit and wood, increasing extraction of vanillin, caramel compounds, and oak-derived spice while also promoting oxidation. Unlike some Caribbean producers that blend pot and column distillates, this expression relies solely on column still rum. This gives it a cleaner, more polished profile, with less emphasis on heavy congeners and more focus on integration and smoothness. The ageing and blending process is designed to build depth through cask influence rather than fermentation complexity.

Blending is central to the final character, combining different cask ages to achieve consistency and balance. The result is a rum that sits between lighter Spanish-style rums and heavier pot still Caribbean styles, offering structure without excessive intensity. Bottled at 40 percent alcohol, the profile is oriented toward sipping, with a rounded texture and a controlled level of sweetness derived from cask ageing rather than additives.
