This is Gaja's Tuscan project, based in Montalcino, where the family established Pieve Santa Restituta in 1994 to produce Brunello di Montalcino from 100% Sangiovese. The estate is relatively small and focused, with fruit coming from carefully selected vineyard sites, giving the wine a more defined and site driven identity than broader blends. Brunello itself is one of Italy's most prestigious appellations, known for wines that are built to age, requiring extended time in oak and bottle before release. Gaja's interpretation keeps that structure but adds a more polished, precise style, often combining traditional ageing with a slightly more modern clarity. The Magnum format plays a big role here. Larger bottles slow the ageing process, so the wine develops more gradually, holding onto freshness and structure for longer. That gives it a more composed, less evolved feel compared to standard bottles at the same age.
There is a clear sense of control from the outset, with the fruit sitting within the structure rather than leading it. Nothing feels exaggerated; instead, everything is aligned and measured, giving a calm, focused impression. The wine carries depth, but not weight. It builds steadily, with fine tannins and acidity shaping the progression, while the fruit remains integrated rather than dominant. This is typical of Gaja's style in Tuscany - precision over power. With time, more complexity emerges, but even early on, there is already a layered feel, with savoury, earthy, and lightly spiced notes woven into the core. The texture is firm and refined, with very fine tannins that give length and ageing potential, especially in Magnum where evolution is slower and more controlled. Overall, this is a serious Brunello, combining the structure and longevity of the appellation with Gaja's signature polish, presented in a format that enhances balance and long-term development.
