Description

Description:

Lagavulin 16 Year Old is a legendary Islay single malt that epitomises deeply peated whisky from Scotland's rugged west coast. Crafted at the Lagavulin Distillery, perched on the shores of Loch Indaal, this expression has become a touchstone for smoky, maritime malts since its formal introduction in the 1980s - though the distillery itself dates back to 1816. Matured for sixteen years in former bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at 43% ABV, the whisky combines powerful peat character with remarkable balance and depth. Time in oak softens the smoke, allowing richer layers of fruit, spice, and oak to integrate seamlessly.

Lagavulin's smoke isn't just intense - it's elegant and layered. The whisky captures the wild character of its coastal home, where Atlantic winds and peaty island soil impart unmistakable influence, yet it remains remarkably harmonious, never feeling one-dimensional.

Tasting Notes
Appearance
Deep amber with copper reflections and slow-forming, oily legs.

Aroma
Smoke and sea breeze rise immediately, followed by notes of iodine, brine, and charred driftwood. Beneath this, hints of dried fruit, rich toffee, and subtle dark chocolate add profound complexity.

Palate
Bold and full-bodied. Silky layers of peaty smoke and burned wood open the palate, accompanied by sweet barley malt, caramelised sugar, and gentle sherry sweetness. Mid-palate reveals leather, espresso, black pepper, and a whisper of sea salt, held together with oak spice.

Finish
Long, smoky, and warming, with lingering embers of peat, soft spice, and a gradual fade into sweet toffee and maritime brine-a classic finish that lingers deep into the next sip.
