Lagavulin 26 Year Old Special Release 2021 is an exceptionally mature Islay single malt that presents the distillery's smoky character in a more restrained and highly detailed form. Produced at Lagavulin Distillery and released as part of the Diageo Special Releases 2021, this expression is matured predominantly in first-fill Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso-seasoned casks. The extended ageing, combined with these rich casks, brings a darker, more layered profile while still allowing Lagavulin's signature peat to remain clearly defined.
With time, the intensity of youth gives way to a more measured and intricate character. Smoke is still present, but it's softer and more integrated, sitting alongside notes of dried fruit, dark chocolate, and treacle. The sherry casks introduce a deeper sweetness and a slightly syrupy richness, balanced by hints of spice, roasted coffee, and a subtle maritime edge. The whisky evolves steadily in the glass, moving from sweet and smoky into more savoury and oak-driven territory, offering a long, unfolding experience shaped by both age and careful cask selection.
