Inspired by the original Royal Navy rum ration, this expression is blended to reflect the Admiralty recipe historically issued to sailors until 1970. It is based on a mix of Caribbean rums, with a strong influence from Demerara-style distillates, known for their heavier, molasses-rich character. Distillation typically involves both column and pot still components, creating a balance between structure and depth. The rum is aged in oak, where it develops notes of caramel, spice, and dried fruit, before being blended to maintain consistency. Unlike heavily sweetened modern rums, the profile is driven by natural flavour development, with no artificial additives shaping the final character.
At 40% ABV, it is more approachable than higher-strength navy styles, but still retains a full-bodied and robust identity. The Demerara influence is particularly evident, contributing dark sugar, molasses, and a slightly smoky, leathery edge that gives the rum weight and presence. The structure allows it to work both neat and in cocktails, especially those that benefit from a richer, darker rum base.
