Produced as a direct recreation of the rum historically issued to the British Royal Navy, this expression is blended according to Admiralty specifications and bottled at 54.5% ABV, known as "gunpowder proof". The name originates from the naval method of testing rum strength - if gunpowder soaked in it could still ignite, the spirit was considered strong enough. The blend is heavily influenced by Guyanese (Demerara) rum, including distillates from historic wooden pot stills such as the Port Mourant still. These contribute a dense concentration of congeners, giving the rum its characteristic weight, depth, and aromatic intensity.
Aged in oak barrels, the rum develops additional structure through extraction and oxidation, bringing forward compounds such as vanillin, caramelised sugars, and spice elements. Compared to the standard Blue Label, the higher proof significantly amplifies both flavour delivery and texture, resulting in a more powerful and concentrated profile. Despite its strength, the spirit is designed to remain balanced, with natural ingredients and blending techniques ensuring that intensity does not overwhelm integration. Dilution - either with water or ice - can reveal additional layers, particularly in the aromatic range.
