From old bush vines in McLaren Vale, this wine is produced by d'Arenberg, a family-owned estate with a history dating back to 1912 and a reputation for traditional, small-batch winemaking. The Custodian is a single-varietal Grenache, showcasing the variety in a purer, more focused form within a region better known for blends. The estate’s philosophy emphasises minimal intervention, aiming to preserve both varietal character and site expression.
Fermentation takes place in small open-top fermenters, often with gentle foot treading to manage extraction, followed by pressing in traditional basket presses. The wine is then matured in large, seasoned oak vessels rather than new barrels, allowing it to develop texture without overt oak influence. This approach results in a style that prioritises balance and definition, positioned in the mid to premium tier as a more refined and character-driven expression of Grenache.
