This expression is a blended Caribbean rum that combines distillates from Barbados and Jamaica, bringing together two distinct rum-making traditions. Produced and bottled by The Duppy Share Rum Co., the spirit is designed to balance the lighter, more refined style of Barbadian rum with the heavier, ester-driven character typical of Jamaican production. The base rums are derived from molasses, a by-product of sugar production. Fermentation methods differ between the two origins: Barbadian rum is typically produced using shorter, controlled fermentations to yield a cleaner profile, while Jamaican rum often involves longer fermentations that encourage the development of esters, contributing to more pronounced fruity and aromatic notes.
Distillation methods also vary. Barbadian rum is generally distilled using a combination of column and pot stills, producing a balanced and structured spirit. Jamaican rum relies more heavily on pot still distillation, which retains a higher level of congeners and delivers a richer, more robust profile. These differing distillates are aged separately before blending. Maturation takes place in oak casks, commonly ex-bourbon barrels, within the tropical climate of the Caribbean. The elevated temperatures accelerate the ageing process, promoting interaction between the spirit and the wood. This results in the development of vanilla, caramel, and light spice notes, as well as a degree of oxidation.
After ageing, selected casks from both regions are blended to achieve the final profile. The blending process is central to the identity of the rum, allowing the lighter Barbadian components to soften the intensity of the Jamaican rum, while still preserving its distinctive character. The final spirit is filtered and reduced to bottling strength using purified water. The name "Duppy Share" references Caribbean folklore, where "duppies" are spirits said to take their share of rum during ageing, echoing the concept of evaporation known as the angel's share. The resulting rum is approachable yet characterful, combining smoothness with a degree of aromatic complexity derived from its dual origin.
