Thelema

The story of Thelema began in 1983, when Gyles Webb and his wife Barbara Webb purchased a neglected fruit farm on the slopes of Simonsberg. At the time, the property - then called Good Hope - had little reputation in the wine world. But Webb saw something others overlooked: the perfect combination of altitude, granite soils, and cooling mountain breezes that could produce exceptional grapes. Rather than rushing to produce wine immediately, Webb invested years restoring the land and carefully replanting vineyards. His goal was simple but ambitious - to craft wines that could stand among the best in the world while remaining true to the character of Stellenbosch.

The estate's name is as intriguing as its wines. "Thelema" comes from the Greek word meaning "will" or "intent." The name reflects Webb's philosophy: great wine is not accidental. It requires dedication, craftsmanship, and a clear vision. Today, Thomas Webb, the son of Gyles Webb, continues the family legacy, ensuring that Thelema remains both innovative and respectful of tradition. Under his leadership, the estate continues refining its vineyards and winemaking techniques while preserving the qualities that made Thelema famous - precision, elegance, and a deep connection to its mountain terroir.
