Description

Description:

Produced in Italy by Gruppo Montenegro, this brandy represents a long-established Italian style, distinct from Spanish solera systems and French Cognac methods. First created in the 19th century in Bologna, it has become one of the most recognised Italian brandies, defined by a balance of structured distillation and controlled oak ageing. Production begins with wine made primarily from Trebbiano grapes, the Italian equivalent of Ugni Blanc. These grapes are selected for their high acidity and relatively neutral aromatic profile, making them suitable for distillation. The wines are distilled using continuous column stills, producing a clean base spirit, though a portion of pot-distilled spirit may be included to add aromatic depth.

Ageing takes place in oak casks, typically a combination of large Slavonian oak and smaller barriques. This dual approach allows for both gradual oxidation and more active wood interaction. The influence of oak contributes notes of vanilla, spice, and dried fruit, while also softening the structure of the spirit over time. Unlike solera-aged brandies, this expression follows a more linear ageing process, where individual batches mature for defined periods before blending. The "Etichetta Nera" designation does not refer to a specific age statement but indicates a particular blend profile within the range, generally associated with a more structured and slightly more mature character than entry-level expressions.

Blending is used to achieve consistency, combining spirits of different ages and characteristics. The final product is reduced to bottling strength using purified water, ensuring clarity and balance without introducing unwanted mineral notes. The overall style is smooth and accessible, with a moderate level of oak influence and a clear expression of dried fruit and spice. It reflects a production philosophy focused on balance and drinkability rather than extended ageing or heavy concentration.
