An older and more structured expression within the Vecchia Romagna range, this brandy reflects extended maturation and a more selective approach to blending. Produced in Italy by Gruppo Montenegro, it builds on the same Trebbiano-based distillation framework but shifts emphasis toward depth, oak integration, and oxidative development. Distillation begins with wine made from Trebbiano grapes, chosen for their high acidity and relatively neutral profile. Continuous column stills are used to produce a clean base spirit, with selected fractions retained to support long-term ageing. The resulting distillate is designed to evolve in cask rather than deliver immediate aromatic intensity.
Maturation takes place over an extended period of around eighteen years in oak, often involving a combination of large casks and smaller barrels. This dual system allows for both gradual oxidation and more active wood interaction. Over time, the spirit develops increased concentration, with oak contributing structure, tannin, and aromatic compounds such as vanilla and spice. Compared to younger expressions, the influence of fresh distillate is minimal. Oxidative ageing plays a more prominent role, leading to the formation of complex notes associated with dried fruit, nuts, and a slight rancio character. The longer time in wood also results in greater integration, where oak and spirit are no longer distinct but fully combined.
Blending is carried out with a focus on balance rather than uniformity, using carefully selected casks to maintain consistency while preserving depth. Reduction to bottling strength is managed gradually to avoid disrupting the structure developed during ageing. The overall profile is more concentrated and refined than standard Vecchia Romagna releases, with a clear progression in complexity, texture, and length.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
Deep and mature, with dried fig, raisin, and apricot. Notes of vanilla, polished oak, and light nutty oxidation add complexity.
Palate:
Full and well integrated, with flavours of toffee, dried fruit, and warm spice. Oak is pronounced but balanced, providing structure without harshness.
Finish:
Long and persistent, with lingering oak, vanilla, and nutty dryness. A soft spice and gentle warmth remain, giving a refined and lasting impression.
