Uncle Nearest

Uncle Nearest is not merely a whiskey brand - it is a historical restoration, a cultural reckoning, and a long-overdue recognition of one of the most influential and overlooked figures in American spirits history. The brand honours Nathan "Nearest" Green,  the first known master distiller of Jack Daniel’s and one of the foundational architects of Tennessee whiskey. His story, long buried beneath the omissions of history, represents both the brilliance and the injustice embedded in America’s industrial and cultural past.

Born into slavery in the early 1800s, Nathan Green possessed extraordinary technical knowledge of distillation, charcoal mellowing, and whiskey production - expertise that would later shape Tennessee whiskey’s defining character. When a young Jack Daniel entered the whiskey trade, it was Nearest Green who served as his teacher, mentor, and production leader, guiding him through the craft that would make the Jack Daniel’s brand famous.

After emancipation, Green became the first paid master distiller at the Jack Daniel Distillery, overseeing operations, refining methods, and passing his knowledge to future generations. His sons and descendants continued working in whiskey production, forming one of the earliest multi-generational African American whiskey dynasties in the United States. Yet despite his pivotal role, Green’s name faded from official records - a reflection of systemic erasure rather than historical insignificance. The Uncle Nearest brand represents a powerful effort to rewrite this omission, placing Green back into the center of the whiskey story where he rightfully belongs.

More than a whiskey brand, Uncle Nearest is a historical monument, a cultural archive, and a statement of recognition. It reminds the world that great legacies can be forgotten — but they can also be recovered, celebrated, and woven back into the narrative where they always belonged.
